Don’t forget thermal insulation: insulate magnetite separators properly
GEG-compliant with system – why magnetite separators also need to be insulated
As an HVAC professional, you know that energy conservation is not only environmentally sound, but also required by law. Since the revision of the Building Energy Act (GEG) in January 2024, stricter requirements have been in place for the thermal insulation of pipes and fittings. Particular attention is now being paid to components that were often neglected in the past, such as magnetite separators.
What the GEG says about insulating pipes and fittings
According to GEG, all hot pipes—i.e., heating pipes, hot water pipes, and circulation pipes—must be insulated with insulation that is at least as thick as the inner diameter of the pipe. This so-called 100% insulation is now the new standard. But the law goes even further: fittings such as valves, pumps, and even magnetite filters are also subject to the insulation requirement.
What exactly does the law require for fittings?
Appendix 8 to Sections 69 and 70 of the GEG clearly stipulates that fittings must have a minimum insulation thickness of 50% of the internal diameter of the pipe, unless there are operational or safety reasons to the contrary. The objective is clear: to reduce energy losses, increase system efficiency, and prevent uncontrolled heat radiation.
Why magnetite separators are not left out
Magnetite separators – such as our MAGella series – are now an integral part of modern heating systems. They protect sensitive components from sludge and magnetic particles, extend the service life of the system, and are quick to install. However, precisely because they are located in the direct flow, they conduct heat just like the pipe itself – and are therefore relevant in terms of insulation.

And this is where practice often falls short: many plant manufacturers insulate the pipe but leave the magnetite filter exposed—either out of ignorance or because there is no suitable solution.
Practical insulation – with system solutions from UWS
For the MAGella MG100 and MAGella MG200 models, we offer custom-fit insulation that can be easily retrofitted—without any tools or additional mounting materials. The insulation thickness of our insulation exceeds the legally required minimum thickness by 50%.
What does that mean exactly?
✅ GEG compliant: Fully meets the requirements of Annex 8
✅ Energy efficient: Reduces heat loss at the fitting
✅ Quick to install: No cutting, no improvising
✅ Retrofittable: Also suitable for existing systems
✅ Safe: Protection against contact and scalding
Conclusion: No thermal insulation without systematic thinking
As a specialist company, you bear responsibility not only for the functionality but also for the efficiency of the system. Anyone installing or renovating heating systems today must take a holistic approach to insulation. This includes professional thermal insulation on all fittings, including magnetite separators.
With MAGella insulation from UWS, you are on the safe side – technically, legally, and energetically.
