But which method is the better choice in practice \u2013 <strong>reverse osmosis or resin treatment<\/strong>? This article examines both methods, highlights their advantages and disadvantages, and provides practical recommendations for HVAC professionals.  <\/p>\n<h2>What is the goal of heating water treatment?<\/h2>\n<p>The goal is always the same: <strong>chemically stable heating water<\/strong> that prevents corrosion, avoids deposits, and meets the requirements of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/uws-technologie.de\/en\/heating-water-vdi-2035\/\">VDI 2035<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>\u00d6NORM H 5195-1<\/strong> and <strong>SWKI BT 102-01<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe following factors are crucial for this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>conductivity<\/li>\n<li>pH level<\/li>\n<li>Removal of hardness minerals and corrosive salts (e.g., chlorides, sulfates)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But what is the most efficient way to achieve this water quality \u2013 with <strong>reverse osmosis<\/strong> or <strong>resin treatment<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<h3>Reverse osmosis in heating water \u2013 membrane technology with limitations<\/h3>\n<p><strong>How it works<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Reverse osmosis (RO)<\/strong> works with a semi-permeable membrane that retains salts and hardness-forming substances. This produces high-purity water with low conductivity. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Advantages<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Very low conductivities possible (&lt; 10 \u00b5S\/cm)<\/li>\n<li>Continuous operation with large quantities of water possible<\/li>\n<li>No consumables except the membrane<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Disadvantages<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>High installation and investment costs<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2013 even the replacement membrane costs around <strong>\u20ac750 per unit<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Wastewater (concentrate)<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2013 depending on the system, the ratio of treated water to wastewater is at least <strong>3:1<\/strong>, and in some cases even <strong>1:1<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2013 A significant proportion of the water <strong>must be disposed of as grey water<\/strong>.
