Anyone who works professionally with heating systems must understand the terms <a href=\"https:\/\/uws-technologie.de\/en\/why-softening-alone-is-not-enough-what-you-really-need-to-know-about-conductivity-in-heating-water\/\"><strong>softening<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/uws-technologie.de\/en\/desalination-in-heating-technology-why-only-chemically-calm-water-provides-long-term-protection\/\"><strong>desalination<\/strong><\/a> but must also <strong>be able to classify them correctly<\/strong>. This is because the differences have an enormous impact on corrosion protection, compliance with standards and the service life of the system.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/uws-technologie.de\/en\/heating-water-vdi-2035\/\"><strong>VDI 2035<\/strong><\/a> makes it clear:<br \/>\nDepending on the system structure and material combination, pure softening is not enough &#8211; <strong>you can only achieve truly &#8220;chemically calm&#8221; water with desalination<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Softening: Limescale prevention &#8211; nothing more<\/h2>\n<p>During <strong>softening<\/strong>, the heating water is passed through an ion exchanger that exchanges <strong>calcium (Ca\u00b2<\/strong><strong>\u207a) and magnesium (<\/strong><strong>Mg\u00b2<\/strong><strong>\u207a)<\/strong> for <strong>sodium ions (Na<\/strong><strong>\u207a)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Result:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The total hardness decreases \u2192 less lime<\/li>\n<li>No stone formation in heat exchangers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>But:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The sum of dissolved ions remains almost the same<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>conductivity remains high<\/strong> or increases slightly<\/li>\n<li><strong>Risk of corrosion remains<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Conclusion: <strong>Softening protects against limescale, but not against corrosion.<\/strong> For many systems, this is not enough &#8211; especially with aluminum components or mixed installations.<\/p>\n<h2>Desalination: corrosion protection through ion discharge<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Desalination<\/strong> goes one step further: here, the heating water is treated via a <a href=\"https:\/\/uws-technologie.de\/en\/mixed-bed-resin-vadion-ph-control\/\"><strong>mixed bed resin<\/strong><\/a> a combination of cation and anion exchangers. This not only removes the hardness formers, but also <strong>corrosive anions<\/strong> such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chloride (Cl-)<\/li>\n<li>Sulphate (SO\u2084\u00b2-)<\/li>\n<li>Nitrate (NO\u2083-)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>removed from the water.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Result:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Significantly reduced conductivity<\/strong> (&lt;100 \u00b5S\/cm)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Minimized corrosion potential<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>VDI-2035 &amp; Co compliant water quality<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The effect in the system:<\/strong> the heating water becomes &#8220;<strong>chemically calm<\/strong>&#8220;.
